After being defeated in World War II Hungary was occupied by Russian troops and, although there was a small democratic period in 1947 establishing a communist government, led by the Hungarian Workers’ Party. Thus, the country becomes a satellite country over the Soviet Union becoming effective in 1949 when Hungary joins the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON) and which form part until 1991.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Hungary was close to Western Europe, joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union on May 1, 2004 ..
